Beyond the "Food Police": My Philosophy as a Dietitian

There are a million platitudes about us being our own worst enemy, especially when it comes to not following through—or even starting—on our goals.

For example, I originally planned for my very first blog post to be about ultra-processed foods. But I stopped in my tracks when I realized how many foods we categorize as healthy are actually processed in some manner. I started to overexplain everything in my writing, got overwhelmed, and gave up!

So, almost a year after launching my private practice and website, I decided that my first official post should simply be about my philosophy as a dietitian. I want to give you a preview of how I operate and help you decide if you want to embark on this wellness journey with me.

First things first: I am not the food police.

If we as humans only ate to fuel our bodies—meaning we never attached any rituals, meaning, or emotions to food, and never ate out of boredom—following the “perfect diet” would be so much easier! But that is not how real life works.

Instead of chasing perfection, my goal is to help you identify the healthy habits you already possess and build upon them until eating well becomes second nature. I encourage my clients to be entirely transparent with me. I want to help you learn how to incorporate the foods you love with balance, and together, we will find exactly what that looks like for you.

In my practice, I love to interact through a food journal. In fact, my most successful clients are those who maintain a food journal throughout their journey with me. Journaling works in multiple ways, including giving you a moment to pause, reflect, and naturally make better choices.

I don't ask for a lot of tedious tracking, either—just snap a photo of your meal and send it my way via our app. If you already love to track macros or calories, or if you have an active membership to another tracking app, all I ask is for a single screenshot at the end of the day. Maintaining an active food journal helps me understand your unique eating patterns, your likes and dislikes, and how we can best implement the Healthy Plate Pattern (more to come on that in a future blog post!).

I also incorporate a lot of nutrition education into my practice. My ultimate goal as a dietitian is actually to transition you to a place where you don’t need me anymore. I want to empower you to live a lifestyle that seamlessly meets your health needs, time constraints, schedule, and budget. Throughout our time together, we will find real-life solutions that make your time and effort truly pay off.
